Sugar at the Core

Sugar. One of the most consumed and addictive substances in the world. On average, people in the United States consume 22 teaspoons of sugar per day, How many days have you gone completely without sugar?

Sugar is in everything. From bread to ketchup and mayonnaise, sugar is in it. It’s included in many of our foods disguised under many names including high fructose corn syrup, cane solids, or any word ending with “-ose.” What’s sad is that even the “natural” foods we buy like 100% juice actually has concentrated forms of that sugar put back into it. So in reality when you are drinking 100% fruit juice, you are drinking the juice of the fruit as well as concentrated forms of the sugar contained in the fruit. You would never get that much sugar just eating a normal apple, but with the added “natural” concentrated fruit sugar, you get much more than you need. So even when the only ingredient is juice, there’s still sugar in it.

My Mom once told me that she was receiving a blood sugar test when she was pregnant, and they gave her the choice to eat a chocolate bar or drink a glass of orange juice. After drinking the orange juice, she was shaking because of the amount of sugar contained in it. Supposedly it was “natural sugar,” but because of the concentration, it still had an adverse effect on her body.

The same principle applies to sugar replacements. Aspartame (which is included in diet drinks) is worse than cane sugar and is considered a poison in larger amounts. It is also put in anti-freeze and cleaning products. If I were you, I wouldn’t even consider putting that into my body. Stevia is made from a plant but it is processed and concentrated to contain more sugar than it would in its natural state. Agave nectar is also processed and concentrated. The only sugar replacement that is in natural state is 100% raw honey, and it is actually very good for you. More on that later.

So why is sugar so bad for us? I know you hear that it rots your teeth, or that if you eat too much you will feel sick, but why is that? Is it really so delicious that our teeth can’t handle it so they rot? I don’t think so.

Sugar is actually considered to be a toxin. It converts straight to fat in our bodies and we receive no nutritional support from it. As people, we consume too much sugar. Sugar is a toxin that our bodies have learned to adapt to the best they can, but they do not thrive off it by any means. And since sugar has been introduced more into everyone’s diet, health problems have exponentially increased. Do you think that since eating too much sugar makes your teeth rot and your stomach sick that it could also make your body sick? Chronically sick? And do you think the buildup of continually eating sugar could cause your organs and body function to go awry? The answer is YES if you didn’t know.

Sugar is probably the absolute worst food you can be consistently putting into your body (aside from drugs and alcohol), especially if you are chronically sick, overweight, fatigued, or trying to live a healthier lifestyle. If you want to get better or feel better, the number one thing i would admonish you to do is eliminate sugar from your diet. Not only will you consistently feel better and have more energy, but you will be enabled to overcome the health problems you do have and be less likely to have health problems in the future. Your immune system will be better and you will feel better.

I wanted to mention briefly sugar’s effect on the body when you have Candida and/or Leaky Gut Syndrome (if you don’t know what those are, you can read about Candida and Leaky Gut Syndrome here). Candida refers to the overgrowth of the naturally occurring bacteria in your digestive system called Candida. It feeds off of sugar and can cause many problems in the body if not taken care of. Just eating too much sugar alone can cause Candida overgrowth.

When you have Leaky Gut Syndrome, the semi-permeable wall in your intestines allows all food to pass through it, including sugar. These sugar particles which cause your teeth to rot and your stomach to be upset on a normal day float through your bloodstream and can soak into all of your organs affecting your bodies functions. If sugar is already a toxin, then allowing it to float through your bloodstream is one of the worst things you can do. This toxin can affect all of the aspects of your body. By eliminating it, you will likely feel a big improvement in your body’s natural functions and energy levels.

Try it. You’d be surprised.

One more thing on sugar. Almost all people who eliminate sugar have some sort of sugar craving, usually because they are addicted to it, but some form of natural sugar is necessary for your body to balance blood sugar levels. The sugar-containing foods you should be consuming are raw honey and fruit, both in their natural state. These both contain necessary nutrients for healthy living and will help balance blood sugar and satisfy sugar cravings. These also don’t feed Candida like other sugars do and will actually boost your immune system rather than destroying it.

I know that avoiding sugar is hard, but it is one of the best things you can do for your body, and once you get over those first sugar cravings, your body will adapt and all foods you should eat will taste sweeter to you. It’s worth staying healthy, having energy, and feeling better about life and yourself.

Happy and Healthy Living,

Sage

P.S. Here’s a quick tip, if you need to conquer a sugar craving, try eating a few frozen grapes. It’s more effective than you’d think.

Update: Here’s a GREAT trailer that takes the words right out of my mouth. You don’t want to miss watching this.

  1. Hi Sage, firstly thank you so much for this information, which I’m very grateful to discover – I’ve had problems for 3 years (severe for the last 6 months) and this is the only place I feel that I’ve found any useful information. I’ve ordered your book & waiting for it to arrive. I had a quick question about good quality 100% pure maple syrup – is it possible to eat this in small amounts on the leaky gut diet, or does this count in your category of sugar replacements? Thank you, and best wishes.

    1. Hey, thank you for your comment! It made my day! I’m glad to hear you’re figuring things out and I’m happy to help. 🙂 100% pure Maple Syrup is a good alternative to the processed sugars. Of course you should only use it moderately, and honey will generally be better for you, but maple syrup actually has a lot of good nutrients in it that help you heal and I think using it here and there is great. 🙂
